February is Heart Month

For the second year in a row, Ottawa Foodie Girlz focused its February fundraising efforts for the Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation during Heart Month. We decided to hold an online auction from Feb 15-20, 2016 to raise funds towards a new hybrid operating room. This hybrid operating room provides one setting for multi-disciplinary team of cardiac surgeons, interventional cardiologists and electrophysiologists to work side-by-side treating all types of cardiac cases at the Ottawa Heart Institute.

The Ottawa Heart Institute has very personal significance for me, as I was patient there in August 2011, at the age of 32. I learned that I was a candidate to have a Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy (PTE). It really is as complex and scary as it sounds, I won’t lie. This is a life-saving surgery to remove deadly blood clots from major blood vessels in the lungs. I was lucky enough to live in Ottawa and have the Ottawa Heart Institute, one of the few centers around the world that performs this life-saving survey. After my surgery, I decided that I had to give back and this desire is how Ottawa Foodie Girlz started.

Ottawa Foodie Girlz would like to thank the numerous businesses that came onboard by donating towards our online auction. We could not have done it without your support. We would also like to thank everyone that registered and bid in our auction. There were some great items up for grabs!

Our fundraising goal for this year was $2000. I’m very happy to announce that on Monday, February 29th I was invited to celebrate the end of #HeartMonth at the OHI. I proudly presented a cheque on behalf of Ottawa Foodie Girlz in the amount of $3076.50. It was an honour for Dr. Robert Keon (Founder of the Ottawa Heart Institute) to accept the cheque from me. 

A special thank you to our friends at Fiazza Fresh Fired. For the second year in a row, they created and sold a custom heart healthy pizza. This year's pizza was called "Caramia" [red sauce base, feta and fiazza blend mix, artichoke, kalamata olives, cherry tomatoes with after fire options: oregano, housemade tzatziki drizzle, and green onion]. $2 from each Caramia pizza went to the Ottawa Heart Institute. A total of $144 was raised and will be presented to the OHI in addition to our cheque.

Our initiative was 1 of 50 that took place in February. Together these events raised a total of $437,000!
