Last summer after brunch at The Urban Pear with fellow Foodie Girl, Jenny Ryan, I discovered Second Avenue Sweets. The shop is located next to the Urban Pear on Second Avenue (at Bank) in the Glebe. To be honest, I had since forgotten about it only because I’m not in that area a very often. I was on Twitter a few nights ago and I noticed a Tweet about their coconut cream pie bars.
I immediately showed my husband and he said "we need to go and get some of those". Coincidently, I had to be in the Glebe for an appointment so it seemed like we were destined to get some. We both love anything coconut so, of course, I agreed to go and pick some up. For anyone who hasn't been there before, it's a small bakery that makes everything from scratch and doesn't use any preservatives. They have a variety of different goodies to choose from. I saw an array of treats like: croissants, a mountain of scones with big pieces of fruit in them, cookies, and something called a “Tuscan Tea Cake”. I looked this up when I got home and it turns out its orange and lemon infused tea cake glazed with honey. The display case also housed different cakes, tarts, cupcakes, and bars. It was very tempting to take one of each but I finally settled on getting the last three coconut cream pie bars, and one carrot and one lemon cupcake. Here’s a closer look:
The bars had three layers: a shortbread crust, a creamy silky filling with a generous helping of shredded coconut, and a tall layer of whipped cream, sprinkled with toasted coconut to finish it off. Both my husband and I enjoyed these tasty bars. The coconut flavour reminded us of warmer times enjoying the sun at the beach. I would definitely recommend these to any coconut lovers out there. These squares were also great alternative to buying an entire pie. We haven’t tried the cupcakes yet but they do look delicious!
