On the 1st day of Christmas

This holiday season, Ottawa Foodie Girlz is celebrating the 12 days of Christmas with a festive Q&A style blog series featuring one local business per day. We’ve spent the last few weeks connecting with local business owners and each day we will we will reveal the business, their story, and a special giveaway. That’s right, we have 12 giveaways coming up!

Make sure to check out our 12 days of Christmas event page every day as we reveal the next business. All giveaways will start the day the blog is featured end 5 days later! All photos have been provided by the business, unless otherwise credited.

On the 1st day of Christmas my true love gave to me.....

Why/How/When did you start your business?
When my son was in preschool, I was looking for something different to gift his teachers at Christmas time. I decided to build a cute little baker's basket. I had a mixing bowl, oven mitts, measuring spoons, sprinkles and a cookie mix. I thought it would be extra sweet to make some cookies too. As an avid Pinterest-er, I'd seen some very pretty cookies out there. I used the first recipe I found on Google for both the cookie dough and the royal icing and just went for it! They didn't turn out too bad, and I absolutely LOVED making them! It QUICKLY became something others were asking me for, and as with most things, practice makes progress! Wanting to stay home and raise my son has been a driving force for me. I love those little moments in the mornings with him and hearing all about his day when I pick him up from school.

Tell us about your successes and/or challenges?
Since my first official order in early 2014, the business has quickly escalated. I learned early on that people just LOVE sweets! Just recently I had my cookies photographed and used on the cover of the NAC's holiday season brochure as well as their website. (I wish someone had recorded my happy dance in the NAC lobby the first time I saw them in print! Haha!) One of the challenges with owning a cookie business, in particular, is finding cookie cutters locally! It's nearly impossible but I've learned to hand cut my dough to ensure I have zero limits on my (and my client’s) creativity!

What is your most popular product?
Hands down, it’s the character cookies. I can't tell you how many I've made including Frozen, Sesame Street, Shopkins, Paw Patrol, Angry Birds, Bubble Guppies, Inside Out, Batman, Minions, Spiderman... I could go on and on! I know by seeing my son's reaction just how much kids love seeing their favourite character in cookie format!

What do you want people to know about you and your products?
Everything is freshly baked for your order and is completely customized. I always say, "If you can dream it, it can be a cookie!". There isn't anything I'm not wiling to try, so your options are endless! I take pride in providing a service that is unlike anything else. I understand that the occasion you're purchasing cookies for is special to you, and by extension, it's special to me.

What’s next?
I definitely have an exciting five-year plan in the works, and it's something you're not going to want to miss! For a shorter-term goal, I'm working with a few locally owned shops to have my cookies available for you seasonally!
