On the 2nd day of Christmas

This holiday season, Ottawa Foodie Girlz is celebrating the 12 days of Christmas with a festive Q&A style blog series featuring one local business per day. We’ve spent the last few weeks connecting with local business owners and each day we will we will reveal the business, their story, and a special giveaway. That’s right, we have 12 giveaways coming up!

Make sure to check out our 12 days of Christmas event page every day as we reveal the next business. All giveaways will start the day the blog is featured end 5 days later! All photos have been provided by the business, unless otherwise credited.

On the 2nd day of Christmas my true love gave to me.....

Why/How/When did you start your business?
Tyler and I started this business because we are passionate health foodies and we saw an opportunity in the Ottawa market. To dig deeper than that, I became very ill in 2010 when I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, which is an autoimmune disorder in the gut. Juicing organic vegetables and fruits was a powerful tool that helped me overcome my illness and I used the power of nutrition to heal myself. I’ve been symptom-free ever since. After that, with inspiration from a trip to NYC and learning the concepts behind cold pressing juice, Tyler and I put our heads together and the rest is history.

The company initially began in November 2013. We visited a popular raw juice bar in New York City that ignited our inspiration. URBAN JUICE PRESS was officially incorporated March 7, 2014.

How did we do it?
With a vision and passion that still exists today. We developed everything from scratch: our recipes, our branding, the concept, and even the juice shop on Spencer St. off of Parkdale in Hintonburg was started and finished by us. Home Depot was our second home for a while

Tell us about your successes/challenges.
Successes: I think our biggest success is how much support we’re getting from our customers and our community. People love our juice and it makes us extremely proud and eager to work even harder to bring the best juice to Ottawa. In addition to that, we get to connect with people on a daily basis and hear the positive changes that our juices are making in their lives.

Challenges: The challenges that I face and that the company faces are the same types of challenges that any new business goes through. This is my first business and in the last two years, I have learned so much. I can say that today I still feel like I know nothing and I am still learning the ropes about how to run a business. Being the president of a company is not easy but it comes with a lot of rewards if you buckle down and stick with it -- and work smartly! I certainly enjoy talking to other entrepreneurs and hearing their stories and any ideas they may have – it’s all so valuable!

What is your most popular product?
Our most popular product category is by far, our juice! The popular one three-way tie: Greens 201, Immune Supercharge, and Turmeric Ave. These three really give you a kick, each in their own unique way. Immune Supercharge is full of beets and has a nice zing of ginger to help boost your immune system. Greens 201 is super green, with about 8-10 black kale leaves in a single 350 mL bottle! Plus, it also has a nice ginger zing. Turmeric Ave., one of our latest developments, is simply divine. There is sweet potato in there! We also press raw turmeric root, which is very anti-inflammatory. This juice has a spicy jalapeno kick too.

Recently launched: super-food blended drinks, aka nutrient-dense smoothies made to order and grab-n-go (Raw Choc, Green Energy, Coconut Hydrator, Hot Apple Pie, Creamy Cashew Nut mylk, AND, Creamy Cashew with cold-brewed coffee!) and power puddings like our lovely Acai bowl.

What do you want people to know about you and your products?
We want people to know that we are serious about what we do. We like to have fun but we really are a passionate bunch when it comes to organic, plant-based nutrition that will make you feel so much better. We really believe that what you put into your body drastically affects who you are and we’re here to help!

Where else can people find your products?
Our products are found in-store at our central hub, and at our first retail juice shop located at 340 Parkdale. The entrance is on Spencer Street (between Parkdale and Hamilton). You’ll also find us online at urbanjuicepress.ca and in local shops around the city including all Green Rebel locations and Bread & Sons.

What’s next?
Go big or go home. Our immediate plans are to ensure we offer a great in-store experience for everyone at our hub and at our first juice shop. We also are working with other business and community partners to create a bigger buzz around our brand and in the community as a whole. A few examples of this are: hosting nutrition and health workshops at our space, participating at events to showcase our products and talk about the benefits of incorporating juicing into your diet. After succeeding these initial goals, we look forward to expanding our concept into other urban areas of the city.
