For the first time, Ottawa is getting it’s own version of Summerlious starting tomorrow Friday, July 21 to Thursday, August 3, 2017 coordinated through the Preston BIA.  The Preston Street BIA was formed in 1986 by a few ambitious business and property owners with a vision. It’s goal was to improve the Preston Street Area. The Preston BIA is very active in one of Ottawa’s most vibrant communities. The goal is to improve and promote business along Preston Street or affectionally called “Little Italy”. Preston street is home to many festivals like the annual Ferrari festival that gets people coming back year after year.

The Summerlious concept has been successful in other cities like Toronto and Vancouver where diners can choose multi-course menus for lunch and dinner for a set price. This popular event gives diners the opportunity to try out new places while giving the restaurants a chance to highlight their best culinary offerings. This year, nine of Little Italy’s best restaurants are participating in Presdelicious with three-course table d’hote dinner menus priced at $28 or $38. The concept is for everyone to have an opportunity to discover (or perhaps re-discover) restaurants on Preston street.

The list of participating restaurants includes:

Ottawa Foodie Girlz was invited to experience Presdelicious earlier this week. After viewing all the great menus, we chose Mason-Dixon kitchen+bar. As one of the newer restaurants in Little Italy, Mason-Dixon kitchen+bar has enjoyed a warm welcome from diners and neighboring eateries alike. Chef and owner Henry Besser-Rosenberg and his team serve up southern smokehouse fare in a cozy, comfortable 35-seat space. A native of Ottawa, Henry has been in the restaurant business for 15 years, and finally realized the dream of opening his own place last October.

It was hard to choose which dishes to have because they all sounded so good, thankfully there was two of us so we got to experience most of the menu. To start to chose the smoked mushroom tart and the grilled cajun shrimp.

Smoked mushroom tart - Mixed smoked mushrooms, arugula, pesto and house smoked cheddar served on puff pastry

Grilled cajun shrimp - Shrimp, chorizo sausage, charred corn and chipotle puree served with cornbread

Then for the main course we chose:

St. Louis pork ribs w/ fries and slaw - Ribs with house fries and slaw. Chef Henry was kind enough to add some beef brisket as well!

Chicken and waffles - Spicy chicken thighs served with warm maple syrup, apple and cilantro

For dessert we had the chocolate bourbon stout ice cream and the warm spiced chocolate cookies. These were so good that we forgot to get a picture! We can assure you that they were a great end to a great meal. The ribs were fall off the bone tender and the rib sauce was one of the best I’ve tried. It was the perfect balance of sweet, tart, and smoky in my opinion. The chicken and waffles were also a great choice. The waffles were warm and soft and paired really well with the crispy chicken.

During the dinner, we had the opportunity to meet and talk with Chef Henry. We talked about his concept for the restaurant, talked to him about his rib sauce (he told us that it has over 40 ingredents in it) and about his food in general. We would recommend that people us this opportunity with Presdelicious to try this place out, you won’t be disappointed.
