Celebrating 2 years of Ottawa Foodie Girlz

It’s hard to believe that two years have already passed since Ottawa Foodie Girlz was formed. Two years ago, we didn’t know what the future held. All we had was an idea, enthusiasm and hope.  Well, now we can honestly say that we’ve exceeded anything we could have ever imagined. We had a great first year and year two was even better. A few things we’re proud to share: On October 21, 2015 we raised over $2600 at our Ladies' Night in support of Harmony House with the help of our friends at The Novotel, The Albion Rooms and our awesome vendors and sponsors. In September of 2015, Judy (our fearless leader and the heart&soul of OFG) was honoured to share her...

An evening at Soif

A few weeks ago our ladies’ night out brought us across the river to Gatineau’s Hull section and Soif, Bar à vin. Soif is owned by a top female sommelier in the world, Véronique Rivest.Véronique Rivest is one of the most respected sommeliers in Canada and abroad. Placing second overall World’s Best Sommelier Competition in Japan in 2013. Before opening up Soif in the fall of 2014, Rivest spent many years at Restaurant Les Fougères, in Chelsea. Soif also recently claimed the number 10 spot (the only Ottawa-Gatineau restaurant) to make Enroute’s top 10 list of new restaurants in 2015. Soif is located on Montcalm Street in the old sector called Hull, in a red brick building where you will find the...

Patio Season has begun and today we go to Murray Street

After a long and cold winter, it finally looks (and feels) like summer has hit the Nation’s capital. We've had a few nice weather days in a row and I know this because I found myself on having lunch on restaurant patios two days in a row. I couldn't help it! A true celebration of summer: good friends, great food and a gorgeous patio. Today the weather called us outdoors and we couldn’t resist going for lunch again. I took to twitter and asked our friend Don of @Foodieprints for suggestions. He quickly responded with a bunch of great options and today we chose Murray Street in the Byward Market. We arrived shortly after it opened, to find the charming, cozy...

Zolas

Last week, I was invited to Zolas to try their new Feast menu. I was among a group of women suggested to Gina by Catherine Landry (creator of the Ladies Who Lunch network in Ottawa). The feast menu is a new option geared to family-style dining. Zolas has had a long-standing spot in the Ottawa restaurant industry. They are well-known for supporting the local community with donations or through their co-op program and also for their involvement in fundraisers like Taste for Life for the past 26 years. Owner, Chef Tony, and his sister, Gina Vacchio, who manages the restaurant, have been there since the beginning, 29 years ago. This family affair also includes staff that have become like family...

Fondue Night

Last May was the first time we experienced Absinthe as a group. During that visit, a few of us noticed the weekly fondue night on the menu. We had talked about going back for a long time and we finally did it! For those that aren’t familiar with Absinthe, it’s a cozy bistro-like place in Westboro lead by chef-owner Patrick Garland. Some recent accolades include being the winner of Gold Medal Plates Ottawa for 2014. The restaurant is well-known for sourcing and using as many local and organic ingredients as possible. It is also known for giving back to the community through things like $1.00 from each burger going to the Cornerstone Housing for Women or supporting the nearby Parkdale Food...
