Ottawa Mission

During the month of May we decided to focus our fundraising efforts in support of the Ottawa Mission. Since 1906, The Ottawa Mission has been providing the basics of food, shelter and clothing to those who are homeless in our community. The Ottawa Mission provides 235 shelter beds for adult men and serves an average of 1,297 meals a day to men, women and children in need. Along with serving three meals a day to residents of the shelter, The Mission also provides community meals for people who may have their own housing, but don’t always have money for food. We got things rolling by emailing The Mission to find out how we could help and we got a response from...

Spring menu preview at Elmdale Oyster House and Tavern

A few weeks ago, we were invited to preview the spring menu at Elmdale Oyster House & Tavern. It was our first time there, but we’d certainly heard great things about it. The tavern itself has a long history and has been a fixture on Wellington for almost 80 years; it was taken over by the team behind Whalesbone at the end of 2012.   The evening was very relaxed with no assigned seating. Rather than a sit down dinner, guests we were free to mingle and to sit wherever they liked. Food was brought out in stages and served buffet style on the bar. Owner Joshua Bishop started off the evening by thanking everyone for coming and inviting us...

Critics at crEATe

A few weeks ago, I was contacted by the Shaw Centre and asked for my mailing address. Hours later, I came home to find a mysterious black box tied with a blue bow and this inside.   It was an invitation to an exclusive event for Ottawa’s Top Food Critics and Bloggers at Shaw Centre’s crEATe kitchen. This is the most innovative invitation for an event that we have received to date, and it’s a real cutting board too. I have to admit, I was shocked (and honoured) that we were included in this group. The invitation left me intrigued and curious to know more of what the night was all about. Admittedly, I didn’t know a lot about crEATe...

Moulin Wakefield Inn: Preview of new menu

Last night we were invited to attend a sneak peek of the Moulin Wakefield Mill’s new menu. The Mill is situated in the heart of Gatineau Park in Wakefield, Quebec about a 20-minute drive from downtown Ottawa. In 2000, the once flour mill was renovated and restored to what is now a 42-room hotel, spa, and meeting centre and is home to two restaurants overlooking picturesque waterfalls. Guests staying at the hotel are steps away from more than 36,000 hectares of forest, hills, lakes, and rivers. The Mill’s two restaurants Muse and Heron Wine Bar have been led by chef by Rémi-Paul Duval since 2009. During his 14-year career, Duval has been the recipient of numerous culinary prizes, including the...
